I got the idea for this project while reading Jonathan Sterne’s book The Audible Past. He writes that people originally thought they could use the phonograph to communicate with the dead. This made me think about my sister Kelly, who died in 2000 from brain cancer. I have so many pictures of her, but I can’t really remember the sound of her voice. It also made me think about the power of recorded sound, and its ability to preserve the human voice. That’s why, for this project, I recorded my mother and father talking about my sister. I then edited that audio to create a kind of arc, starting with her birth and going through her battle with cancer. I didn’t film my parents, because I wanted to put more emphasis on their words. I also want this to be an ongoing project, something I add on to over the years. I hope to find other people who knew my sister—old coworkers, friends, classmates—and interview them.
