I think that one of the main goals of teaching is taking the students from where they are to where they are not. I believe that students will understand the teacher's big ideas and themes better if we start with things that they can relate to in their own life. The thought of bringing big ideas in into the classroom and questioning the student about how the idea or themes that relate to their life is very important. It is important to teach to children
and teenagers using big ideas. I think that we should weave simple ways
to relate the big ideas to students lives into lesson plans and
units of instruction. This way students will get more out of what they
are taught on a higher level. They almost wouldnt realize that they
were learn more that was on the surface until the lesson is done. I think
about they way that I was taught art before college and wish that I was
taught using the lessons that we created in this class. The themes and
big ideas that everyone used in these lesson plans are wonderful. If I
was taught these lessons I feel like I would have gotten a lot more out
of all the art classes that I had taken over the years. Another thing that I feel is important
when teaching is realizing what background the students come from.I feel
like when I teach need to ask myself questions that help guild me in the
right direction on how to approach the class when teaching them a lesson. Questions
like: What issues in the news will my students be exposed to? How innocent
are they really? What background do these students come from? Children
more than likely know more about the way the world works and what is bad
in the world than we assume. I think that based on this there are more
themes and big ideas than I possibly could have imagined before taking
this class. There are so many themes that relate to their life that can
start a lesson off and who knows what they I look forward to getting out there and teaching children. They are like sponges and I think that it will be awesome to know that somewhere out in the world there are a bunch of people that know things that I taught them. |
