The sound contained in the above movie is subtle and may not be audible without the use of headphones.

Eroder, a Kinetic installation that is activated by the viewer. When the viewer becomes 12" to 24" from the box of sand a motion detector is activated. The kinetic action then starts. First, a solenoid despenses water into a bend wooden arm. The bent arm is then tipped to the left via a pulley system and then returned to the starting position using a two directional motor. The water is poured on top of the box of sand with holes. The viewer is responsible for the start of the erosion. If the viewer is not present, no new erosion takes place. The initial idea behind creating this erosion machine came from the dialect that text messaging has constructed. The shortening and abbrieviating of multiple words into minimal characters—in a sense the erosion of grammar. This is a prototype for future installations that will address erosion from the word list ( above right ) and actually erode these words. The Basic Stamp micro-controller was used in programming the motion sensor, two directional motor, and solenoid valve.
